Big Meat Run - '07

Big... Meat... Run...  Just the words conjure up visions of monster size Jeeps and buggies on monster size meats.  "Big Meat All Week" was the mantra for the last few days leading up to the event... and what an event it was!!!  Officially, just over 200 rigs registered, with actual attendance estimated at well over 300 rigs.  Contrary to what the title implies, this run is about more than "Big Meats"... in fact, all tire sizes and vehicle capabilities are welcome.  Many smaller tire equipped rigs were present, wheeling right in among the "big boys".  But, make no mistake about it... it's called the "Big Meat Run" for a reason.

This event began running seven years ago when "Long John" Sumner, at that time the rock-star leader of the Wagoner Machine Shop gang, decided to have a St. Patrick's Day weekend run, and invite all of their friends and customers... with one catch... 44 INCH OR LARGER TIRES REQUIRED!!  Over the next five years, the Big Meat Run blossomed into the premier event in the region for hard-core, big-tire, long-wheelbase rock aficionados.  Many expected the event to go the way of 8-track tapes and black-and-white TV after WMS's demise early last year... something remembered fondly by the old-timers, but just not hip anymore.  Nothing could have been further from reality!!  Long John resurfaced with a new shop, Sumner Machine Works, and the run lived on.  This year, a few changes were made.  For the first time, sponsors were added and a free raffle was held on Saturday night.  This was a BIG hit, as sponsors such as Interco Tire, Ouverson Engineering & Machine, Ramsey Winch, Coleman Outdoors, Northwest Fab, and Moser Engineering donated some major swag.  Several shops in the region were also included, a complete sponsor list is included below.  About 1-in-4 registrants won a prize, but, judging from appearances EVERYONE left happy!!

Disney, OK is the home for the Big Meat Run.  If you have never been to Disney, try to make it some time.  There are rocks, big rocks, bigger rocks, ... and more, even bigger rocks!!!  The Rock Garden, The Waterfall, and Little Blue Sluice are favorite 'wheeling spots... there are different lines for different levels of rigs.  The Wall of Death was a favorite spectator spot for much of the weekend as some of the more adventurous souls, with big horsepower and big kahunas, took their turns flirting with disaster.  Several successful climbs were made, but there were a couple of nasty rollovers.  Thankfully, no one was seriously injured!!

If you like to get out and play with the "big boys", or just like to watch some awesome wheeling action while drooling over some of the sick rigs there, then the Big Meat Run is for you.  Next year's event is March 15th and 16th, 2008...at Disney, of course.  For more info, check out  BEASTJEEP.COM ... Does your meat measure up?!?!?
